Established in 1923 along with the ‘Big Four’, Southern Railway (SR) was a significant passenger operator running around the South of England. The formation of Southern included the merging of South Eastern & Chatham London and South Western Railway, London Brighton South Coast, and more. Unlike other operators in the ‘Big Four’ Southern focused primarily on passenger operation only, connecting London with popular destinations across the South and South West of England. As part of this Southern also embraced electric traction and expanded electric services in suburban areas. These important lines (and Southern legacy), lives on to this day with Southern Govia Thameslink.

During the ‘Big Four’ era Southern was renowned for some distinctive and innovative locomotives. Among the Southern line-up were the Bulleid Pacifics designed by Oliver Bulleid including the famous ‘Merchant Navy Class’ and the ‘Battle of Britain’ Class. These were often found running famous services like the Bournemouth Belle or the Golden Arrow. These along with the ‘Schools Class’ from Richard Maunsell, the multi-purpose S15 by Robert Urie and others played an important role in shaping southern rail operations.
