Founded in 1833, the Great Western Railway (GWR) went on to become synonymous with British railway heritage. The name is known by railfans all over the country to this day and you can find a variety of ways to recreate classic GWR railroad adventures in Train Simulator Classic. We’ve launched a new GWR Centenary Bundle to get you started and you can find a guide list below for even more GWR add-ons.

The initial GWR line was created to link Bristol to London to increase trade and tourist opportunities. Built by engineering legend Brunel, it featured many construction marvels including the Maidenhead Railway Bridge and Box Tunnel near Bath – Both record-breakers for their time. The line quickly became famous for holiday makers. Promoted by GWR as the ‘The Holiday Line’ it carried passengers to popular holiday destinations like Torquay, St Ives, Newquay and more as their network grew. Railfans gave their own nicknames to the line, which was often called ‘God’s Wonderful Railway’ for the picturesque views or ‘Great Way Round’ thanks to the meandering nature of the line.

The GWR became one of the ‘Big Four’ railway companies formed on 1 January 1923 as part of the Railways Act - The only one to retain its original name. It was during this era that the iconic Castle and King Class locomotives arrived. Setting impressive records along the way and cementing their place in history, like the GWR Cheltenham Spa Express which was at one point the fastest train in the world!

It’s no surprise then that the GWR name continues to attract crowds of railfans to see the locomotives in action on preserved lines or rail tours.
