Southern Pacific’s big and burly General Electric U33C and sister U30C “U-Boats” are coming soon to Train Simulator!
Classic 1960s and 1970s-era General Electric “U-Boat” diesel locomotives are coming soon to Train Simulator with the Southern Pacific U33C/U30C DLC from accomplished developer DTM!
Beginning in the late 1950s, America’s three major diesel locomotive builders – Electro-Motive, General Electric, and Alco – were competing in a race to satisfy the railroads’ ever-increasing appetite for lots of diesel horsepower. By the early and sixties, the race was on in earnest and in 1965-66, all three builders introduced 3,000-horsepower, six-axle locomotives.
General Electric’s entry was the 3,000-horsepower, six-axle (C-C) U30C, specifications which made it a direct competitor to Electro-Motive’s new, 645-series-powered SD40 (and Alco’s C630). The U30C was an evolutionary step for GE, replacing the builder’s 2,800-horsepower U28C in General Electric’s standard catalog. As with the vast majority of U-Boats, the heart of the U30C was GE’s 16-cylinder, four-stroke FDL-series diesel power plant.
Over a decade-long production run, the GE U30C tallied 600 units built and was purchased by 21 railroads. Burlington Northern was the largest buyer of the U30C (180 units) with Union Pacific (150 units) close behind. Both of the western giants would deploy the GE diesels largely to tote the ever-increasing tonnage of coal originating in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin. Further west, Southern Pacific more modestly sampled the U30C, acquiring 37 units.
Beginning in 1968, GE introduced a sister model to the U30C – the 3,300-horsepower U33C. GE’s 3,300-horsepower U-Boat would remain in production through 1975 and gained a dozen customers which ordered a total of 375 locomotives. Stretching more than 67 feet in length and weighing upwards of 400,000 pounds, the U33C was a husky hauler. Satisfied with its U30Cs, Southern Pacific went big for the U33C, acquiring a roster of 212 units, which was by far the biggest assemblage of the 3,300-horsepower U-Boats. Dressed in SP’s familiar scarlet and gray livery, the burly GEs could be found throughout much of SP’s sprawling route system and the veteran diesels remained in service on the Southern Pacific into the late 1980s. Union Pacific, likewise operated its U30C into the late 1980s, with the last units retired in 1989.
With exceptional attention to accuracy and detail, noted developer DTM will soon bring both the U30C and U33C to Train Simulator in this upcoming pack. Dressed in Southern Pacific’s gray and scarlet livery, the U33C will be featured in multiple variations, including standard and L-windshield treatment and two types of engineer control stands.
The U30C is provided, as is the U33C, in Southern Pacific’s colors and also is included in Union Pacific’s timeliness yellow, gray, and red livery. A generic gray U33C is also included that’s perfect for enthusiasts wishing to paint other railroad liveries.
Along with the classic GE U-Boat diesels, this DLC will feature a superb and welcome assortment of era-appropriate tank cars including DOT Type 111, 111A, and 112 cars in multiple liveries, a unique 89-foot-long four-trucked tank car behemoth, and SP’s distinctive Tank Train consist! And the pack will also provide a Southern Pacific steel cupola caboose in three liveries. Combined with four career scenarios on the popular Train Simulator Donner Pass Southern Pacific route (route available separately), the General Electric U33C, U30C, and accompanying rolling stock will make for realistic and challenging heavy American freight railroading! – Gary Dolzall
