Busy and fast. Union Pacific’s Kansas City-Topeka main line is a famed American route that is bustling with traffic, as up to 60 trains a day hustle at speeds up to 70 mph along the line laden with tonnage including intermodal traffic, coal, automobiles, grain, and manufactured products.
Now, in High Iron Simulations’ Granger Heartland Scenario Pack 01 and its ten realistic career scenarios, railroading on Train Simulator’s Granger Heartland route comes to full – and highly authentic – life as you serve as an engineer on the historic and always busy Midwestern route!
Granger Heartland Scenario Pack 01 and its ten career scenarios are closely based on actual contemporary railroad operations and among the challenging scenarios, you will:
- Handle priority symbol freights including expedited auto rack and intermodal trains.

- Handle a variety of local and lineside switching assignments along the busy line.
- Work yard duties at busy Topeka Yard.
- Take the controls of Union Pacific diesels including the EMD SD70ACe, GP40-2, SD9043MAC, General Electric ES44AC, and distinctive UP SW10 rebuilt switcher.

The ten career scenarios in this new scenario pack are closely based on actual Union Pacific operations and offer hours of authentic railroading! In the two-part scenario “Union Pacific Symbol AAMML,” you are the engineer of UP’s priority auto rack train operating from Armourdale Yard in Kansas City to Mira Loma, California. With a trio of UP SD70ACe diesels, the AAMML is overtaking a manifest freight at speed on the always-busy double-track line.
Yard switching and local set-out and pick-up work is the task at hand in High Iron Simulations’ career scenario “Topeka Switching Duty” as you handle a pair of veteran UP EMD GP40-2s and work at Topeka Yard and at East Topeka. As the veteran Union Pacific Geeps switch Topeka Yard, a westbound freight with UP SD70ACe power rolls past.
Union Pacific’s Topeka-Kansas City route is host to an endless stream of unit coal trains en route from Wyoming’s Powder River Basin to power plants in the Midwest and South. In the two-part scenario “Union Pacific Symbol CNAIM9,” you’ll climb aboard the cab of a burly UP SD9043MAC as it leads a heavy coal train eastward (above) and the ponderous unit train also has DPU locomotives placed mid-train and on the rear (below).
High Iron Simulations’ career scenario “Muncie Hammerheads” recalls the mid-1990s as one of Union Pacific’s unique SW10 rebuilt EMD diesel switchers handles a variety of challenging switching duties around the sprawling Muncie, Kansas industrial complete.
Union Pacific LMC52 is a local freight originating in Topeka and destined for Kansas City’s 18th Street Yard and in the scenario “Local Work at Loring,” you are the engineer of the local and have set-out and pick-up work to handle at the Loring quarry and at lineside industries in nearby Bonner Springs, where the mid-train DPU of a coal train slides past the local’s UP GP40-2s.
Union Pacific symbol IG4LB is an intermodal train operating between UP’s Global 4 facility in Joliet, Ill., and Long Beach, Calif. In the two-part scenario “Bound for Long Beach,” you are the engineer of the IG4LB making an end-to-end run over the Train Simulator Granger Heartland route. As the journey begins, the UP GE ES44ACs of the IG4LB are making their way over Kansas City’s “High Line” in the predawn hours (above), then later the stack train hurries across the Midwestern plains as the sky brightens (below).
Union Pacific operates a number of locals on the Kansas Subdivision, one of which is LMC40, operating from Kansas City to Topeka. In the scenario, “UP Local LMC 40,” you are the engineer of the GP40-2 powered local on a wintry Kansas day and you will be handling lineside industries at Lawrence and on the west end of the line.
