TS20: Introducing the CSX Hanover Subdivision Route!

Written by: Gary Dolzall.
Coming soon to Train Simulator is the rugged, challenging, and historic CSX Hanover Subdivision!
Heavy tonnage, rolling farmlands, rugged mountains, contemporary motive power, and the history-rich and scenic countryside of Maryland and Pennsylvania all await you in the upcoming CSX Hanover Subdivision route for Train Simulator!
High Iron Simulations, known for its realistic scenario packs, has brought together an extraordinarily talented and experienced team – Rick Grout, Michael Stephan, Wayne Campbell, and Paul and Gary Dolzall – to create the Hanover Subdivision route.
The upcoming CSX Hanover Subdivision route for Train Simulator will extend from Porters, Pennsylvania (east of Hanover, Pa.) to Hagerstown, Maryland.
  • The eastern section of the line, traditionally part of the famed and popular Western Maryland Railway, passes through rolling and classic "Pennsylvania Dutch" farmlands, while the western portion of the route is dominated by the crossing of the Blue Ridge Mountains (also known as South Mountain), and features grades of up to 2 percent, Jack’s Mountain Tunnel, and two horseshoe curves! The mountain crossing and even the farmland sections of the railroad feature a “saw-tooth” profile, making for remarkable operating challenges.
  • Across its length, the route is loaded with more than 20 line-side industries, including manufacturing, food processing, agricultural, warehousing, and aggregates facilities. Sprawling quarries and a massive cement plant on the line generate heavy rail tonnage, and the subdivision has interchanges with three short lines (York Rail, Maryland Midland, and Gettysburg & Northern).
  • The route passes through a famous and historic part of America, including Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, site of the largest and most important battle of the American Civil War, where the rail line passes directly through a portion of the preserved National Battlefield. And the wonderfully restored Gettysburg station is the location at which President Abraham Lincoln arrived to give his timeless "Gettysburg Address."
  • The upcoming Train Simulator CSX Hanover Subdivision route will include a robust selection of four locomotives and a variety of freight equipment, highlighted by a superbly crafted and unique CSX SD40-3 rebuilt locomotive! Enhanced versions of the CSX GE Dash 8-40CW (in CSX YN3b livery), EMD CSX SD40-2, and a short line EMD GP9 complete the locomotive roster. And the route will also present a diverse selection of freight equipment, including two-bay and three-bay covered hoppers and stone cars in multiple authentic CSX liveries.
  • The route will include ten realistic and diverse scenarios (nine career scenarios and free roam scenario) and, as an optional purchase, you will be able to receive ten additional career scenarios – 20 scenarios in total – as part of a specially-discounted bundle!
As an engineer on the upcoming 62-mile CSX Hanover Subdivision route, you will face the challenges of heavy-haul railroading on roller-coaster grades, a combination that will require a steady hand on both throttle and brakes! And in addition to main line operations, you’ll tackle a variety of local and switching operations at lineside industries and amid the urban settings and railway yards of Hanover, Gettysburg, and Hagerstown!

Coming soon to Train Simulator, the CSX Hanover Subdivision route will feature heavy tonnage, rolling farmlands, rugged mountains, contemporary motive power, and the history-rich and scenic countryside of Maryland and Pennsylvania! At famous Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, CSX SD40-3 4082 is on the point of westbound tonnage. Screenshots by Gary Dolzall.
Among four locomotives included with the upcoming CSX Hanover Subdivision route is a beautifully crafted and distinctive CSX SD40-3 rebuilt diesel (above), which features a realistic cab interior and engineer’s controls (below). Note: Screenshots depict content in development.
The western terminus of the upcoming CSX Hanover Subdivision route is Hagerstown, Maryland, once the home city of the Western Maryland Railway. On trackage shared with Norfolk Southern, CSX GE Dash 8-40CW is bound for Hagerstown Yard and swinging past the ex-Western Maryland station, which now serves as the city’s police station.
The Hanover Subdivision serves a variety of more than 20 lineside industries, among them large quarry and cement facilities that generate heavy tonnage for the line. Just east of Hagerstown, a trio of CSX EMDs pass through the truly massive cement plant and quarry complex at Security, Maryland.
The Hanover Subdivision’s crossing of the Blue Ridge (South Mountain) is both challenging and beautiful. On the west slope at the quaint village of Pen Mar, Maryland, a pair of CSX GE Dash 8-40CWs wearing the railroad’s “YN3b” livery are easing downgrade.
The east slope passage of South and Jack’s Mountains by the Hanover Subdivision is truly daunting, with a tunnel, grades of up to 2 percent, and a pair of horseshoe curves! The center of the horseshoe at Greenstone, Pennsylvania (above) is occupied by a sprawling aggregates quarry and processing plant. On a snowy winter day, CSX GE Dash 8-40CWs are swinging around the line’s second horseshoe, near Fairfield, Pennsylvania (below).
The saw-tooth gradient of the Hanover Subdivision is on clear display as an eastbound freight makes its way over a roller-coaster profile near Fairfield. The combination of heavy tonnage and the undulating countryside will require a steady hand on both throttle and brakes! The route will include ten realistic and diverse scenarios (nine career scenarios and free roam scenario) and, as an optional purchase, you’ll be able to receive ten additional career scenarios – 20 scenarios in total – as part of a specially-discounted bundle!
Grain and agricultural shippers provide tonnage for the Hanover Subdivision and will offer lots of switching and local tasks on the upcoming Train Simulator route. East of Gettysburg at Granite, Pennsylvania, CSX SD40-2 8816 and a sister are working a westbound freight.
The namesake town and central operating point of the Hanover Subdivision is Hanover, Pennsylvania, home to numerous industries, a CSX yard, and a connection with the short line York Rail. CSX SD40-3 4038 is about to slap across the diamond crossing with York Rail’s ex-Pennsylvania Railroad line (above) as it passes the Hanover depot and Hanover Public Library. For service on the route’s connecting short lines, the upcoming Hanover Subdivision route will include an EMD GP9, as is depicted serving industrial trackage in Hanover (below).
Porters, Pennsylvania is the eastern terminus of the upcoming route. CSX Dash 8-40CW 7653 has tonnage on the move at Porters, which is the location of the CSX interchange with York Rail’s ex-Western Maryland line to York.
