The Isle of Wight is one of England’s most popular holiday destinations and thousands flock to the island annually. Steeped in history and mystery, the island has a plethora of interesting tourist attractions, beautiful beaches, and a world-renowned music festival. These are spread across the island for newcomers to explore and lucky locals to enjoy.
Due to the island's size and undulating landscape, major roads have never been a possibility. Thankfully various enterprising companies had thought that railways and tramways were viable. This has led to an eclectic mix of some of the most interesting and unique railways in England.
Railways arrived on the Isle of Wight in the early 1800s, and have gone through a variety of changes, from branch line extensions and closures to changes of ownership and the dreaded Beaching cuts that saw much of the line closing in 1966. One of the greatest changes the railways experienced was the electrification of the route between Shanklin and Ryde pier head.
Previous proposals were made to electrify the line prior to World War 1, but these fell through as they were deemed unnecessary. In 1967 as British Railways was modernising much of their network fresh plans were implemented on the Islands railways, and the line from Shanklin to Ryde Pier head was electrified. Due to the height restrictions of the Ryde tunnel, none of the electric train stock used by British Railways at the time could be used, as an alternative London Transport tube trains of 1923-1934 vintage were converted and used. In 1989-90 these trains were replaced by modified and refurbished London Transport 1938 tube stock (the Class 483 units).
