The Central Switzerland S-Bahn project was introduced in 2004 to bring together the various regional lines around Luzern and Zug into a more centrally orientated commuter network, the heart of which is Luzern Railway Station. The network was broken up into many different lines, and the S1 traverses the rails of the former Olten-Luzern railway, which dates back to 1856. Today the line is important as ever, serving as a commuter corridor linking together the towns within the canton of Luzern.
